Most UK grant funders give money to organisations. UnLtd is one of the few that gives money directly to people — individual social entrepreneurs building a venture to tackle a social problem, whether or not they've got a charity or company set up yet. That makes it one of the most accessible funding routes for someone at the very start of an idea, long before they'd qualify for almost anything else on Grants Hub.
What UnLtd actually is
UnLtd describes itself as a foundation for social entrepreneurs, and its awards are funded through an endowment originally set up by the Millennium Commission with a National Lottery grant. Rather than a single fund, UnLtd runs award programmes aimed at different entrepreneurs and different stages of an idea — but all of them combine a cash award with personalised, practical support to help you actually use it well, not just hand over money and disappear.
The two programmes
Millennium Awards Trust — open to any social entrepreneur aged 16+ tackling a social issue. This is the broad, general-purpose route: if you've got a venture idea addressing a real social problem, this is usually the one to check first.
Funding Futures Programme — open specifically to 16-30 year olds building solutions to financial exclusion: the barriers that stop people accessing bank accounts, credit, or other basic financial services. If your idea is aimed at helping people shut out of the financial system build resilience, this programme is a more targeted fit than Millennium Awards Trust, and worth applying to instead of (not as well as) the general route.
The two award tiers
Both programmes offer the same two tiers:
- Starting Up — up to £8,000, for early-stage ideas that need a first injection of funding to get off the ground.
- Scaling Up — up to £18,000, for ventures with some traction already that need funding to grow.
Which tier fits depends on where your venture actually is, not how much money you'd like. An idea that's still on paper is a Starting Up application regardless of how big the ambition is — UnLtd's support is built around meeting you at your actual stage, and assessors will notice a Scaling Up application from something that hasn't started yet.
Who can apply
Eligibility is deliberately low-barrier compared to most grant funders:
- You don't need a registered charity or company — many successful applicants apply as individuals with an idea
- Millennium Awards Trust: open to anyone aged 16+
- Funding Futures Programme: open to those aged 16-30, with a venture specifically addressing financial exclusion
- Your venture needs a genuine social purpose — a for-profit idea with no social angle isn't a fit for either programme
This is worth pausing on: most funders on Grants Hub require at least a year of accounts, a governance structure, or charitable status before they'll consider an application. UnLtd is built for the stage before any of that exists.
What makes UnLtd different from a standard grant
The award itself is only part of what you get. UnLtd's model is explicitly about personalised support alongside the money — helping you work through the specific challenges your venture faces rather than just processing an application and paying out. If you're choosing between UnLtd and a similarly-sized pot of money from a funder that offers cash only, the support layer is the actual differentiator, and it's worth weighing that when you're deciding where to spend limited application time.
Common reasons applications don't succeed
The social purpose is vague or bolted on. Applications that read as a standard business idea with a social angle added afterwards score worse than ones where the social problem is clearly the reason the venture exists.
Applying to the wrong tier. Requesting Scaling Up funding for something that hasn't launched yet, or Starting Up funding for a venture that's clearly already established, both signal to assessors that the applicant hasn't understood what each tier is for.
Funding Futures applications with no financial exclusion angle. Because Funding Futures is a targeted programme, ideas that don't clearly connect to financial exclusion are a weaker fit for it than for the general Millennium Awards Trust route — even if the applicant is in the 16-30 age bracket.
No clear plan for the money. Because part of UnLtd's offer is practical support in using the award well, applications that can't say specifically what the funding will be spent on and why struggle against ones with a concrete plan.
How to apply
UnLtd runs award rounds with their own opening and closing dates rather than a single fixed annual deadline, so check the current round status directly on the UnLtd awards page before applying. Applications go through UnLtd's own online system, linked from that page.
