Sportscotland Grants: Funding for Sport and Physical Activity in Scotland

Community sports facility in Scotland with people taking part in outdoor physical activity

Sportscotland is the national agency responsible for developing sport in Scotland, and it funds a much wider range of projects than most people assume — not just elite performance, but grassroots clubs, community facilities, coaching qualifications, and inclusion work. Its funding comes from a mix of Scottish Government and National Lottery money, spread across several distinct programmes rather than one single grant.

If you're running a sports club, community group, or facility in Scotland, there's a good chance one of sportscotland's funds fits your project — the challenge is knowing which one, and when it's actually open.

Who can apply?

Eligibility varies by fund, but across sportscotland's programmes, applicants are typically:

  • Not-for-profit, voluntary, or community sports clubs
  • Registered charities
  • Social enterprises
  • Schools and educational bodies
  • Community councils and statutory bodies
  • Scottish Governing Bodies of sport (for coaching-specific funding)

Sportscotland is explicit that it wants to support smaller organisations, and will take an applicant's income into account when assessing a bid — a large, well-resourced club competing for the same pot as a small community group isn't treated identically.

The main funds

Sport Facilities Fund. This is sportscotland's capital programme for building, upgrading, or extending places where people take part in sport — new or improved facilities, inclusive changing rooms, outdoor and adventure sport access, floodlights, and major equipment. Grants go up to £200,000 for constituted, not-for-profit organisations, rising to £250,000 for projects in areas of high deprivation. Applications are assessed against two fixed deadlines a year: 1 April and 1 September. The next window closes 1 September 2026, and the programme's own budget guidance puts annual demand well above the roughly £2 million available each year — so a strong application matters more than simply meeting the criteria.

Awards for All. The quickest route to a small grant. Awards range from £300 to £10,000, applications are rolling (no fixed deadline), and decisions typically come back within 12 weeks. Projects need to do at least one of three things: bring people together across a community, improve a shared space, or help people reach their potential by supporting them early. One catch worth knowing before you apply: you can only hold one Awards for All grant at a time, across sport, arts, or community categories combined — so timing matters if you're planning more than one small project.

Coach Education Subsidy Funding. Aimed at Scottish Governing Bodies of sport, this subsidises the cost of coaching qualifications for their members — lowering a real barrier (course cost) that keeps people out of coaching, with an explicit push toward equality, diversity, and inclusion in who gets to coach.

Additional Government Investment. Alongside its core programmes, sportscotland has been distributing extra Scottish Government investment aimed at getting more people active and supporting wellbeing — a reminder that sportscotland's available funding shifts year to year with government priorities, on top of its standing programmes.

Sportscotland has also run larger one-off capital programmes — its Cycling Facilities Fund, for instance, committed £8 million to building cycling infrastructure and drew over 100 expressions of interest before it stopped accepting new ones. It's a useful sign of how oversubscribed a well-publicised capital fund can get, and why timing an application early in a funding cycle matters.

What sportscotland prioritises

Across its programmes, sportscotland consistently favours projects that:

  • Widen participation among people who aren't currently active, not just add capacity for people who already are
  • Address a specific, named barrier — cost, access, confidence, lack of local provision
  • Show real community backing, not just organisational ambition
  • Fit the fund's specific purpose (a facilities upgrade won't succeed as an Awards for All application, and vice versa)

Common reasons applications don't succeed

Applying to the wrong fund. Sportscotland's programmes are genuinely different — capital works, small community grants, and coaching subsidies aren't interchangeable, and picking the wrong one wastes an application cycle.

Missing the fixed Sport Facilities Fund deadlines. Unlike Awards for All, this fund only opens twice a year. Miss 1 April or 1 September and the next chance is six months away.

Vague community benefit. "For the local community" doesn't hold up against an application that names who's underserved and explains why.

Holding an existing Awards for All grant. If your organisation already has one open, a second application won't be considered until it's closed out — check this before you apply, not after a decline.

Underestimating demand. With Sport Facilities Fund applications routinely outstripping the roughly £2 million annual budget, a technically-eligible project isn't automatically a funded one — the strength of the case matters as much as meeting the criteria.

How to apply

Applications for all sportscotland funds go through the funding section of sportscotland.org.uk, where each programme has its own guidance and application form. Read the specific fund's eligibility criteria in full before starting, since sportscotland assesses each programme separately and a strong Awards for All history won't carry weight on a Sport Facilities Fund bid.
